Ostracised and deeply embittered, Byron left England in 1816, never to return, and travelled to Geneva, where the Shelleys and Claire Claremont had rented a villa. Here he wrote The Prisoner of Chillon, two acts of Manfred and Canto III of Childe Harold. Claire was, briefly, his mistress and in January 1817 their daughter Allegra was born.
