Lord Byron and his portraits in Italy a talk by Dr Christine Kenyon-Jones

This talk discusses and illustrates the wide range of painted and sculpted portraits of Byron that were made in his lifetime, focusing on those that were created face-to-face with him in Italy, where he lived from 1816 to 1823. Made by artists and sculptors from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities – Italian, French, Danish and American as well as British – these works used many different styles of representation and approaches varying from neo-classical to Romantic, and from the most formal to the highly personal.

Dr Christine Kenyon-Jones is a writer and lecturer, and a Research Fellow in the Department of English at King’s College London. Her books on Byron include the prizewinning Dangerous to Show: Byron and His Portraits, with Geoffrey Bond (2021), and Jane Austen and Lord Byron: Regency Relations, published by Bloomsbury in February this year.
