Field Place was the Shelley family home. The artist of this watercolour, Elizabeth Shelley, was the eldest of the poet’s four sisters. As children, she and Shelley were inseparable; she participated enthusiastically in his scientific experiments, and collaborated with him on literary projects. In 1810 they published, anonymously, Original Poetry by Victor and Cazire. Elizabeth and Shelley were estranged after the poet’s expulsion from Oxford. She never married, and lived her whole life at Field Place.
