George Keats was two years Keats’s junior. In June 1818, after several unsuccessful attempts to start a career, he married and emigrated to America. ‘My brother George has ever been more than a brother to me,’ Keats wrote several weeks later, ‘he has been my greatest friend.’ Apart from a brief visit at the beginning of 1820, George never returned to England. After early difficulties in Kentucky he moved to Louisville, where he eventually became a wealthy and respected citizen. He died of tuberculosis in 1841, aged forty-four.
