Free talk on tuberculosis and the scientific discoveries of the 19th Century

On Thursday 14 September at 5pm one of our expert guides will be giving a public talk on the cultural history of tuberculosis and 19th-century ideas about the reversible nature of death, which inspired Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.

The talk addresses the lives of John Keats and of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley through the scientific understanding of the human body in the early 19th century, focusing on the cultural history of tuberculosis, and on the experiments and discoveries that affected the dominant paradigm of mortality of the time.
